Food banks seeing record numbers, especially children
Arizonans are receiving emergency food in record numbers, according to a report this week. The fourth edition of the quadrennial Hunger In America study released by Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, reports that 888,100 unduplicated Arizonans, received emergency food in 2009. Almost half of them, over 400,000, were children under the age of 18. This represents a stunning 85% increase over the previous 2006 study. A staggering 74% of those households live below the federal poverty level, which is $22,050 annually for a family of four.
These numbers in Arizona are well above the 46% increase of those who received emergency food nationwide, no doubt a result of the economy, housing crisis and rising unemployment in the years between studies. In America, one in eight people, 38 million received emergency food in 2009. This includes 14 million children and 3 million seniors. Fortunately, these numbers provide concrete information regarding how we can improve. We might be reminded of the old Russia when almost all food was rationed. This still occurs in many parts of the world. This could happen in America. In 2009, 77% of client households experienced food insecurity, up from 71% in 2006. Of these, 86% had children under the age of 18, compared to 73% in 2006. Also to our good fortune, only 38% of those households experienced outright hunger. That's still a lot of hungry people. There are still many thousands of people, almost half of which are children, right here in this area where you live. Helpline Ministries needs your help.
