3.12 Needles, CA - Deal reached, Bashas' Grocery will remain open

Bashas', the only supermarket in Needles, will remain open after some hard negotiations.

The city manager in Needles said that the city, the building owner and Bashas' Inc. reached a tentative deal that will have the city provide up to $700,000 over four years to offset utility costs.

Bashas' is working to emerge from bankruptcy protection. The company runs about 125 stores, the vast majority in Arizona.

City Manager William Way said the three entities, the city, Bashas’ and property management firm Reliable Properties, were able to come together to reach an agreement. He said all three will contribute something to help keep the store open. All three sides made concessions, Way said.

City Manager William Way says the store is an important economic driver in the city of about 5,000 and provides about 50 jobs. If it were to close, residents would have to drive nearly 30 miles round trip into Arizona for groceries.

Way says the City Council is expected to formally approve the deal on March 23.
