15th Annual Carrie Conner Bicycle Safety Rodeo
Approximately 135 children participated in the children's safety rodeo on Saturday in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The event is sponsored by the Bullhead City Police and Fire Departments, Wal-Mart and Western Arizona Regional Medical Center.
Before kids put their safety skills and knowledge to the test, each child received free bicycle registration. “It’s important to register your bike with the police department, so if it is ever lost or stolen, we know who to return it to,” said Community Services Officer Lorrie Duggins, Bullhead City Police Department. The majority of this year’s bicycle rodeo participants also received a free helmet, thanks to donations from several local service organizations. “We made sure each child had a helmet that was fitted securely and buckled correctly,” said Public Information Officer Larry Tunforss, Bullhead City Fire Department. “We want to teach children at a young age the importance of wearing a properly-fitted helmet, as it can prevent serious brain injuries in the event of a fall or crash.” Once the children’s bicycles were registered, their bikes were inspected and fine-tuned. Those who did not have a bicycle were given a loaner bike. Children learned the rules of the road from Bullhead City Police Bicycle Officers who were on hand to help kids go through the different safety courses. After completing the course, participants entered a raffle to win a new bike. Children or adults who wish to register their bikes with the Bullhead City Police Department, can come to the Police Department lobby, located at 1255 Marina Boulevard, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information, call (928) 763-9200.
