3.10 Mohave County - Hays to challenge Sheahan for Sheriff job

Lake Havasu City resident and life-long law enforcement and corrections career Republican Mike Hays, filed notice with the Mohave County Elections Department on Monday, March 8th, 2010, for the organization of "The Committee to Elect Mike Hays for Sheriff 2012" as a $500 dollar threshold statement document required by Arizona statues to start conducting solicitation activity. Mike Hays also filed a request for the "Official Budget/Expense Report" for the Mohave County Sheriffs Department in 2009 from the Recorder's Office, to get a real snapshot of where the taxpayer's money is going. Although, authorized under public law, the request is expected to be denied.

"I plan to seek the nomination for the Republican party for the position of Sheriff for Mohave County in 2012. Although we have plenty of time to set up campaign schedules prior to the official primary election, our staff is busy scheduling future rallies and group meetings across county-wide contacts. I filed today early because coming from my own personal experience in both military and law enforcement for over 25 years, where I feel it is always best to be early and on-time, this endeavor would be no exception. I want the voters to have ample opportunity to examine my vision and compare it to the current administration's performance, to decide for themselves what is best for Mohave County before any official deadlines.

The Sheriffs Office has been operating over budget and understaffed for over 16 years, with constant high turnover and poor leadership that does not serve Mohave County's interest for citizens, which has apparently become common place internal policy. Every resident should expect total professionalism and high standards of service, no matter the circumstances. Our schools, children, communities, and businesses demand better in all aspects of the example set by the Sheriff; there should be absolutely no excuse when it comes to protection & service, especially if a new balanced streamlined budget of priority needs were in place, not wasteful internal spending year after year that affects service.

Over the course of the campaign, I will be personally be visiting mostly every city, town, veteran halls, schools, Republican and Independent club or organization, and public places of leisure to meet and introduce myself to the people of Mohave County. Sheriff Tom Sheahan has had over 16 years to make a difference, but I believe the time has come to start seeking a fresh and new perspective involving the official safety decisions for future through the Sheriffs Office, as the statistics speak for themselves. I believe also this is due in part to our current national unemployment crisis, the constant rise in the county crime rates, and influx of new residents that dictate the need for new strong leadership to adapt to these uncertain times, not simply business as usual that puts our neighborhoods at risk."
