Immigration reform petition filed in Nevada
A conservative assemblyman and U.S. Senate hopeful filed an initiative that would establish tough new immigration laws in Nevada similar to those recently passed in Arizona. The measure would require photo identification to vote.
Republican Chad Christensen said Nevada is "on the edge," and estimates undocumented workers cost the state $700 million a year in education, health care and prison costs.
Petition backers must collect 97,002 valid signatures by Nov. 9 to send it to the 2011 Legislature. If lawmakers reject it or fail to act, it would be put to voters in 2012.
