5.4 Mohave County - SILENT WITNESS TIP of the MONTH for MAY

Usually our tip of the month is issued to help keep us safe, this month we will be focusing on our four legged friends.

The American Humane Association has declared May 2 - 8, 2010 as “Be Kind to Animals Week.” And, while “Be Kind to Animals Week” is celebrated only once a year, there are ways people can be kind to animals every day.

Here are a few tips to help keep pets safe and cool in Arizona’s Hottest Weather:
Make sure your pet has plenty of water and shade, this is crucial.
Small wading pools outside work great to cool off pets.
Do not leave your animal unattended in a vehicle. It takes only a few minutes for your pet to overheat, suffer organ failure or even die. If you see an animal in an unattended vehicle that may be in distress, do not hesitate to call your local law enforcement.
Do not walk your dog during the day because the pads on their feet can burn. Instead, walk in the early mornings or evenings.
Never leave your animal unattended for more than 24 hours.
If your pet is required to be tied up while outside, make sure it has plenty of shade and water. The tie should be no shorter than 10 feet.
For larger animals such as horses, please make sure they have adequate shade and water.
There are some signs of pet dehydration; including excessive drooling, bloodshot eyes, and loss of skin elasticity. If you are concerned your pet may be dehydrated, get it into the shade, provide water, cool it down with a damp cloth and contact your veterinarian immediately.

These animals give us pleasure and unconditional love; please return your love by keeping them safe.

To report crimes anonymously call 753-1234 or 1-888-227-8780. It pays to fight crime.

BE INFORMED - BE AWARE - BE SAFE

Silent Witness meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Kingman Police Department. Please consider joining us.
