Details released of shooting death of customer at Costco
Details are finally emerging in connection with a deadly police shooting outside a Costco store in Summerlin. Police are saying they are confident that what they reported back on Saturday is still consistent and will clear the three officers involved.
Police now say the man killed by police gunfire, Erik Scott, 39, was throwing metal water bottles around, acting bizarre and arguing with security. He was removing metal water bottles out of the packages in the boxes. He threw a few on the floor, put some in his cart. His behavior was not normal, according to Capt. Patrick Neville, with Las Vegas Metro Police. Neville says the store was evacuated due to Scott's behavior and also the fact that he had a gun on him at the time. He says that Scott was grabbing for the gun and would not cooperate with officer's commands to get on the ground. "You see a gun come out of an individual's waistband, them making no other comments or actions toward you. You'd have to assume that they're doing something they shouldn't be," said Capt. Neville. Meanwhile, a close friend of Erik Scott's says he finds all of this hard to believe and wants to defend the man he's known for almost 15 years. "He loved kids, and was just a loving, honest guy. I don't know what to say. It's beyond comprehension that you have a guy like that, that would do anything to jeopardize the public at Costco," said Mike Pusateri, who is standing behind his friend's name. Pusateri says Scott had a concealed weapons permit but never would've used his gun to harm anybody. He said the army veteran graduated from West Point Military Academy and earned his master's from prestigious Duke University. He describes his friend as put together, stable and having a lucrative career as a medical device sales representative with Boston Scientific. Both Pusateri and Scott's attorney, Ross Goodman, say he was at Costco shopping with his girlfriend the day he was killed and the two were planning on moving in together. They say there is absolutely no indication that there was anything to trigger the events that police say unfolded. Surveillance video from inside Costco has not been released. Police have said it was workers who noticed that Scott had a gun and called 911. Police are also commending the Costco employees for acting quickly by also moving to evacuate the store of patrons prior to their arrival. Scott was rushed to a hospital, but died on the way. On the way to the hospital, a second gun was found on Scott. No store patrons or employees were hurt. Police want to emphasize that they believe no customers were ever in danger by police gunfire.
