Valley View Auxiliary awards scholarship to MCC nursing student
A fourth semester nursing student at Mohave Community College has received a second scholarship from the Valley View Medical Center Auxiliary. Brittany Crawford of Bullhead City was awarded a $500 scholarship as she enters her final term to become a registered nurse with the hopes of launching her career in the Tri-State area.
Crawford received a similar scholarship a year ago with a 3.23 grade point average. In the two semesters since, she has raised her GPA to 3.9 and was also awarded two student recognition awards for academic excellence, even while working full time at MCC and raising a son. She is scheduled to graduate in December. In addition to taking the Arizona Board of Nursing licensure exam after graduation, Crawford then plans to pursue both bachelors and masters of science degrees in nursing. She hopes to become a family nurse practitioner who is not only a hands-on nurse but can also teach future nursing students. She is also interested in working as a labor and delivery nurse. “This is the first time that the Auxiliary has repeated a college scholarship for the same person,” said Joyce Ambrosic, the Auxiliary’s scholarship chair. “Brittany’s perseverance and dedication show that she was the best choice to receive the scholarship for the fall semester.” Valley View’s Auxiliary is the non-profit organization run by hospital volunteers. Funds for its charitable programs, including scholarships, come from proceeds in the hospital gift shop as well as other contributions. The Auxiliary is working with MCC to provide two nursing or health-related scholarships each year rather than one. “This has helped my path toward my nursing and educational goals,” Crawford told members of the Auxiliary’s scholarship committee. “The Auxiliary scholarship has assisted me, along with my son, with living and educational expenses. A nursing education is not cheap.” Valley View Auxiliary members volunteered more than 11,000 hours last year for hospital and community services. In addition to raising funds for the MCC nursing scholarships, Valley View volunteers have also been active in activities ranging from Project Angel Tree and WeekEND Hunger Backpack program for area school children to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life and the Auxiliary’s own Operation: Cover-Up program for newborns at Valley View. The Auxiliary was named the Tri-State area’s social service organization during the 2010 Community Achievement Awards. Valley View’s latest expansion will soon result in a 90-bed all private room acute care hospital with two adjacent medical office buildings and an on-campus rehabilitation complex. Valley View was recently voted the best medical facility in the region. It is part of LifePoint Hospitals, Inc., a leading hospital company dedicated to providing quality healthcare in non-urban communities. Call or email us today and let GSX help your business to grow.
