8.04 Lake Mohave - Family is saved by life jackets when boat sank

A family was enjoying a day at Lake Mohave when a sudden storm forced a 3-foot wave over their boat Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Ed Torrance told his wife, "I said, buckle up your jacket. I think we're going to be losing our boat, and she looked at me in disbelief and then realized I wasn't kidding around like I do."

The Torrances were speaking out during an event hosted by the National Park Service. Park officials said that the family's experience is the perfect example of why life jackets are crucial -- even on a calm day.

Five adults and seven children, ranging in age from 6 months to 11 years old, were on board the boat. Everyone rushed to put on a life jacket.

After the boat sank, the family floated for 20 minutes before they got the attention of three boats that came to their rescue.

The boat was recovered from the lake's bottom by scuba divers.

People should always wear life jackets when in a boat on the water.
