8.11 Lake Havasu - Body recovered from Lake Havasu near Grass Island

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department recovered the body of a missing swimmer from Lake Havasu’s Grass Island Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's department said the body of Joseph Hetherington, 62, of Huntington Beach, CA was discovered in about seven feet of water by family members.

Tuesday evening, the Lake Havasu Police Department’s boating unit received a call at about 6:30 p.m. about a missing swimmer. A Lake Havasu City Fire boat, three Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Waterways division boats and the San Bernardino County SO all joined in the search, but stopped the operation due to darkness.

Hetherington had been boating with his family north of Grass Island, when he went swimming about 200 yards from the shore. A gust of wind forced the boat to drift. The children onboard the vessel were unable to get back to Hetherington before he went under.
