8.01 Mohave County - Law enforcement will be patrolling school zones

The Mohave County Sheriff Office announced today that a “Back to School Traffic Safety Campaign” will start August 2nd. Sheriff Tom Sheahan said, “Deputies will be patrolling roadways around our county schools and in particular monitoring school zones”. Deputies will also be watching for cars speeding through the “School Speed Zones” and failing to yield for children in crosswalks. Officers will also be on the lookout for drivers who fail to stop for school buses when loading or off loading children.

The Sheriff went on to say “the goal of this effort is not to hand out citations but to raise awareness that school is back in session and students will be traveling to and from school. By conducting this campaign we hope to slow drivers down and remind everyone to drive safely”.

Sheriff Sheahan offered these tips and reminders:
School Speed Zone limits are 15 miles per hour.
State law requires drivers to stop at all times when pedestrians or children are in crosswalks.
Wait for the crosswalk to clear completely of children or crossing guards before driving through.
Do not pass a school bus that has its lights on and stop-arm extended.
Make sure your child's walk to a school is a safe route with crossing guards at any major intersection.
When dropping your children off at school drop them off in designated areas.
Be aware for young children traveling to and from school.

The Sheriff’s Office “Back to School Traffic Safety Campaign” will run through August 20th and is being funded by a grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
