Outbreak of typhoid blamed on frozen fruit product
An outbreak of typhoid fever that infected four in Nevada and five in California has been linked to a frozen fruit product, health officials said Thursday.
Investigators linked traces of salmonella typhi, the bacterium that causes typhoid fever, to a Goya brand frozen fruit product containing mamey fruit pulp. The fruit, also known as zapote and sapote is grown in Central and South America and often used in shakes and smoothies. The four patients in southern Nevada were all under the age of 30, according to the Southern Nevada Health District. All of them are recovering. Typhoid fever is rare in the U.S., with an estimated 400 cases reported annually, health officials said. The majority, 70 percent, of cases are acquired when a person travels out of the country. The Goya brand mamey fruit pulp has been voluntarily recalled, and the health district is recommending anyone who feels ill to contact their doctor. Symptoms of typhoid fever include a sustained fever, stomach pains, headaches, anorexia, a slow heart rate, malaise, constipation or diarrhea or a nonproductive cough.
