8.27 North AZ-UT - UPDATE 8.30 Cowboys and Indian? One deputy shot dead, chase continues

8.27 Fredonia, AZ - Multiple agencies, including U.S. Marshals, are pursuing a man that fatally shot a Utah sheriff's deputy near the Arizona-Utah border.

Coconino County deputies were chasing Scott Curley, 23, an Indian, on foot when he shot a Kane County, Utah, sheriff's deputy with a high-powered scope rifle.

Coconino County announced Thursday night that the deputy had died. Deputy Brian Harris, 41, is survived by his wife and two daughters and was considered a pillar in the community.

The incident began shortly after 2:00 p.m. Thursday about three miles east of Fredonia, a small town just south of the Utah border in Arizona.

Curley is familiar with the area and continued to fire at pursuing officers Thursday night.

The manhunt lasted throughout the night and into Friday, with 120 law officers, some in helicopters or handling tracking dogs, searching the remote desert. 21 law enforcement agencies are participating in the search.

It is believed that Curley may have stashed food and supplies in caves and cliffs described as "spider holes," his friends told investigators.

Saturday 8.28: There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Curley, who has vanished, according to U.S. Marshals.

Monday 8.30: Scott Curley has been arrested in Kane County, Utah. Just after midnight Monday morning, law enforcement located and took Curley into custody.

A citizen in the area of Lost Spring called police to report a suspicious person was trying to get into his home. As the individual looked outside he saw a man with a rifle slung over his shoulder trying to climb into a window.

A Coconino County Sheriffs spokesman said that Curley was located in the area and taken into custody without resistance. He said they believe the rifle Curley had with him is the same one used to shoot and kill Deputy Brian Harris last Thursday in Fredonia.

Curley is charged with first degree murder.
