Law enforcement takes back unwanted prescription drugs
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has designated a day for the public to safely dispose of their unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs.
On Saturday, September 25th, the DEA will hold the first ever nationwide prescription drugs take-back day. Hundreds of law enforcement agencies will have drop-off sites from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 25th for people to anonymously discard their unwanted prescription medications at no cost, in an effort to prevent increased pill abuse and theft. This day is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse. According to the DEA, studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends; often from the home medicine cabinet. Prescription and over the counter solid dosage medications (i.e. tablets and capsules) will be accepted. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not part of this initiative. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is hosting 3 locations county-wide, including a partnership with the Bullhead City Police Department. The Arizona Department of Public Safety is also hosting a drop-off location in Kingman.
