Police say “Gold Parties” can be illegal
The Bullhead City Police Department is cracking down on illegal “gold parties” to prevent criminals from selling stolen property.
“A ‘gold party’ is similar to a Tupperware party, except people turn their unwanted old gold jewelry into cash,” said Lieutenant Steve Smith, Bullhead City Police Department. “But a lot of people are not aware that it’s illegal to do this out of their home.” Arizona Revised Statute 44-1602.I states “dealers of precious items may only purchase at their permanent place of business, as listed on their sales tax license.” (Click Here to read ARS 44-1602). Violators of this statute are guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor. Also, the company or individual hosting must have a Bullhead City secondhand dealer’s license and are required to record and describe all transactions. “The Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit monitors property that goes through pawn shops and secondhand stores to see if any property is stolen or linked to local burglaries,” said Lt. Smith. “We need to be able to review items sold at these parties as well.” Under the statute, purchases of precious items must be by check only, made out to the seller.
