National Emergency Preparedness Month
September is National Emergency Preparedness Month, a time to remind and encourage people to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies.
Step 1: Emergency Supply Kit (enough supplies for at least 3 days) Water: One gallon per person, per day, plus extra for pets. Food: Non-perishable, ready-to-eat foods and manual can opener. Plus, eating utensils. Flashlight: Hand crank model or have extra batteries. Radio: Hand crank model or have extra batteries. And, a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert. Water Treatment: Iodine tablets or unscented chlorine bleach and an eyedropper. Phone: wireless phone, fully charged. Documents: Copies of important documents (insurance cards, photo IDs, proof of address, important phone numbers, maps) in waterproof, portable container. Personal Items: Soap, feminine products, toothbrush/paste, diapers, medication, pet supplies, moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation etc. Whistle: To signal for help. Tools: Screwdriver, wrench or pliers to turn off utilities. Matches: In a waterproof container. Dust mask: To help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place. First Aid Kit Cash Clothing and Blankets Fire Extinguisher Tarp, tent and poncho Paper and Pencil: Books, games, and puzzles are also a good idea. Step 2: Make a Plan Create a family emergency plan. Write and rehearse communication and preparedness plans that identify a family meeting place, account for special needs, and include local emergency numbers and an “out-of-town” contact.
