8.30 Colorado River - Woman driving watercraft runs over man snorkeling at Davis Camp

Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an injury boat accident at Davis Camp on the Colorado River Saturday shortly after 1:00 p.m. and contacted a male victim, 47.

The victim said he was snorkeling about 20 feet from the shoreline when he heard a watercraft approach. He said that he stood up in chest deep water and started waving a red and white diver’s flag to get operators attention, but the operator continued the course in his path.

The victim advised that he submerged to avoid getting struck by the watercraft, but he was struck on the right side of his back and his head hit the bottom of the watercraft. He said that the female operator stopped the watercraft about 30 feet from him and said she was sorry and continued northbound on the river.

Deputies observed a four inch abrasion to the victims back. The victim said that he was going to seek medical attention on his own.

Deputies contacted the owner of the watercraft and the owner was not aware that his watercraft had been involved in an accident. The watercraft owner said that a friend identified as Amber Macis Flores, 20, of Las Vegas, was driving his watercraft and she has since left traveling home.

Flores was contacted and she returned to the park. The victim immediately identified Flores as the operator of the watercraft.

Flores said that she was operating a personal watercraft northbound on the Colorado River approximately 20 feet away from the shoreline and traveling about 45 miles per hour. Flores advised that initially she did not see the victim snorkeling and then suddenly she was going too fast when she saw him and accidently drove over the top of him.

Flores said that she stopped and said that she was sorry. She advised that the victim was yelling at her, so she thought he was not injured, she continued traveling northbound.

Flores was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident, felony. Flores was taken into custody, transported and booked into the Mohave County District II Substation without incident.
