1.23 Phoenix - Chief Justice Berch to celebrate AZ Centennial, Valentine’s Day with historic marriage ceremony

Clerk of Mohave County Superior Court Virlynn Tinnell is inviting local engaged couples to become part of Arizona history.

“On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2012, Arizona will celebrate 100 years of statehood,” she said. “And for that occasion, Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Rebecca White Berch will perform a marriage ceremony for up to 100 couples on the steps of the Arizona Supreme Court, 1501 West Washington Street in Phoenix.”

Tinnell is asking interested couples to obtain their marriage licenses and coordinate with her office by February 6 to be part of this Centennial Celebration Wedding event.

“Those who would like to be married by Chief Justice Berch in Phoenix that day just need to come to one of our Superior Court buildings and purchase a marriage license by February 6 and let us know their plans,” she said. “They must be at least 18 years old or, if not, have parental permission. A license costs $72. The future bride and groom each will need to show valid photo identification.”

Tinnell’s department will facilitate the process with Maricopa County for interested Mohave County couples that obtain their licenses on or before February 6.

“The couples need to check in at the Arizona Courts Building by 3 p.m. on February 14,” she said. “The ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. They can bring their friends, families and witnesses. There will be no specific attire required, although I am sure many people will be dressed up and will have individual receptions planned.”

For more information, call Tinnell’s office at (928) 753-0713.

“It’s not very often that people can have the chance to be married by the chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court,” Tinnell said. “The fact that this will take place on Valentine’s Day and the Arizona Centennial will be something to remember.”
