DPS conducts traffic stop, man shot and killed himself
Authorities say Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona has been reopened after a serious situation involving a suspected robber killing himself during a traffic stop Tuesday.
The highway was back open around 5:00 a.m. and no hazardous materials were found. Mohave County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the death of Troy Eugene Williams, 43, of Punta Gorda, Florida. Williams robbed a bank in Mesquite, Nevada around 10:30 a.m. Williams, who has been living in Nevada for a while, handed a teller a note saying he had a gun and a bomb. Mesquite police say Williams got away with $2,800. Carrick Cook with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said officers were trying to locate Williams. Cook said around 1:00 p.m., DPS pulled Williams over and, as they approached, he shot and killed himself. Officers continued to investigate and reportedly saw boxes in the car that strongly suggested there was a serious hazardous chemical inside the car. Authorities say they found no such materials in the vehicle. A hazmat team was flown in from Phoenix to St. George, Utah, in order to test and confirm what the substance is. Cook said it is not drug related. Mohave County Medical Examiners Office will be conducting the autopsy.
