2 Men Die in Police Custody This Week
11/5 Las Vegas - Police detectives are investigating some of their own officers after two men die while in custody. Both deaths occurred while being restrained by officers right before they stopped breathing.
Eight officers and one sergeant are on paid administrative leave after the two incidents happened within four days. Metro said they are investigating to see if proper procedure was followed in both cases. One incident happened outside of an apartment complex on Sunday evening 11/1. Police say they got a call that two men were in a knife fight. Police arrived and subdued the suspect, Daniel Morantes, 47. They attempted a weapon check and that's when Morantes started acting erratically. Several officers were present and subdued him without much difficulty. The second man, unnamed, died Wednesday evening after receiving a call from a social worker needing assistance. Officers were dispatched to subdue a man under state supervision and had stopped taking his medication. The man resisted and an officer applied what's called a lateral vascular neck restraint, which slows blood flow to the brain, in order to subdue the subject. Soon after, the man stopped breathing. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. The man was extremely large. The police investigation continues and the Clark County Coroner is checking for drugs, alcohol or underlying medical conditions. Call or email us today and let GSX help your business to grow.
