Mohave County residents angry about taxes
11/4 For many years the communities of the northwest corner of Arizona have been isolated and mostly ignored by their state and county governments. Some of the residents of these communities are coming together in a united voice, telling officials at the Mohave County seat in Kingman that "they're mad as hell, and they're not going to take this anymore."
On Thursday 10/29 more than 125 people gathered at the Beaver Dam Elementary School to vent their frustration over courts and crushing recent increases in property taxes. Jim Rea, the owner of the Scenic General Store, has been collecting tax bills from neighbors in Scenic/Beaver Dam area who have dropped off their statements over the last few weeks. He cited example after example of extreme tax increases, with many seeing a 100% increase and more. Sure, Beverly Payne and the various employees of the county have plenty of explanations such as fire department needs, returning school taxes, land speculation and much more. But reality is that the county has the authority to take the taxpayer's money when they want it or need it, or take their property. It doesn't matter that the taxpayers are the ones that need the most help right now. "I encourage you to appeal," Payne told the crowd, but that is not likely to help ailing property owners right away. Property owners had to appeal the assessments within 60 days, meaning they had to be appealed by May of 2008, but the assessments didn't mention how much the taxes would be on those properties. By the time property owners received their actual tax bills in the summer of 2009, the window had already closed for them to appeal those assessments. Nevada has a 3% cap on property tax increases, no such cap exists in Arizona. Call or email us today and let GSX help your business to grow. Phone: (928) 768-1400 Email: Click Here
