Don't be a holiday victim
It doesn't matter if you are shopping, traveling, at the doctor or feel safe in your home. This time of year brings out the worst of the criminals. Whatever you are doing, keep yourself safe. This is not a time to assume everything will be fine.
In only a few minutes while in the grocery parking lot early this week, two seperate people came out of the store to find their cars missing. One of them had just stopped by the grocery after a shopping spree at Wal-Mart and the car was loaded. Law enforcement has given us a few tips for the holidays: While you are out, avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Carry only bring what you plan to spend. When in the store, keep purses and wallets in hand, not in a cart. Put packages and purchases in your trunk. Do not leave visible in your vehicle. Make sure your vehicle is secure. Do not walk alone in parking lots or halls, especially at night. Ask mall security for an escort. Do not show off by wearing expensive jewelry. Burglars watch and strike households that are vacant or have expensive items under the tree. Close blinds or curtains so thieves cannot see valuables inside your home, especially presents under your tree. Lock all doors and windows securely. Do not leave a spare key outside your home or under the doormat. If you travel out of town, make your house looks occupied. Ask a neighbor to collect your mail/newspapers or put your mail on hold at the post office. Ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway. Make sure your house looks secure by closing the entrance gate. An open gate looks inviting. Trim back any plants/bushes around your home where burglars could hide. Consider leaving important documents and valuable items with a family member while you are gone or put them in a safe or security deposit box. Don't put empty boxes outside your home that identify new and expensive gifts. Before leaving town, call your police department or the Mohave County Sheriff's Office at 800-522-4312 to request extra patrol or vacation watch.
