Part time jobs paying more than full-time
In early November, there was a bright spot in the latest unemployment numbers: a sharp increase in people getting hired for temporary work.
"We're seeing an uptick in companies using contract labor," said Joseph Tuerff, an executive with temp agency Manpower. Nationwide, about 35,000 temp jobs were added last month, according to U.S. Labor Department statistics. It's a rise economists say is a sign that the economy may be rebounding. "It's shifting from an employer's market to an employee's market for people whose skill sets are in demand," Tuerff said. Many companies are beginning to dip their toes into the hiring pool, but are hesitant to bring in full-time employees. And that's where people with special skills can cash in. "You're going to find that you can make more as a contract laborer than as a full time employee," Tuerff said. Specialists in IT, healthcare and engineering are in the best position to find bigger pay checks for part-time work. But there's also a catch because temp jobs often don't pay for benefits like health insurance. "At the end of the day, the net is going to be the same," Tuerff said.
